- Resum
- In the south of the Rhone valley area and in the next plains of comtat Venaissin, Provence and Mediterranean Languedoc, marked by the presence of the pontifical court in the 14th century, the assistance toward the poor and sick persons shows contrasting sights. From the traditional monastic hospitality, inherited from early middle ages, to municipal assistance developed by the communities of inhabitants in the 15th century, a great diversity of individual and collective initiatives provided help and aid for the most miserable classes of the society. By the same time, they allowed a real promotion in the moving of the church to the lay people, thanks to their growing interference in fields that were before reserved only to the clergy.
