Overwien, Oliver - Arnzen, Rüdiger, "The Arabic Translation of Hippocrates' Aphorisms and Galen's Commentary on the Aphorisms", GoHA Working Papers, 4/Version v1 (2026), (versió electrònica).
- Resum
- A few years ago, Rüdiger Arnzen edited Ḥunayn ibn Isḥāq's (d. 873 CE) Arabic translation of the Hippocratic Aphorisms and published it on HUNAYNNET. This edition aimed to replace the old edition of John Tytler (1832), which is considered inadequate by modern standards. Arnzen's edition is based on fifteen manuscripts containing only the Aphorisms, seven manuscripts containing Galen's Commentary on the Aphorisms, including the Hippocratic text, (i.e. the lemmas), and Tytler's edition, which is based on two manuscripts. One can find this information by clicking on the ‘Information' button above the Arabic text on HUNAYNNET. However, no further information, such as details on the manuscript relationships, can be found there. Rüdiger Arnzen has now kindly made his unpublished introduction to the edition available to us. He titled it “Hippokrates' Aphorismen, Übersetzung von Ḥunayn ibn Isḥāq. Notizen zur Editio minor (anstelle einer systematischen Einleitung)”. Having read them, both I and Raphaela Veit, the Arabist in our team, realised that these “Notizen” contain many important insights that are not only of great significance for our project, but which should also be made known to the readership of the HUNAYNNET edition of the Aphorisms. As Rüdiger Arnzen did not intend to publish them and it is unlikely that anyone else will make an edition of the Arabic Aphorisms in the near future, we have agreed that I will publish them on his behalf.
