Green presented a paper to the Society for Ancient Medicine and Pharmacology on the topic: "The ‘Genetics Turn' in Disease History: What It Means to ‘Retrospectively Diagnose' in an Age of Evolutionary Pathogen Histories." Today, a much abbreviated and more focused version of that talk appears as a blogpost with the same title as part of the Pasts Imperfect blog: https://pastsimperfect.substack.com/p/pasts-imperfe ... . It focuses specifically on the topic of smallpox/variola virus, and includes reference to the latest genetic and bioarchaeological work on the disease in areas under imperial Roman dominion. Most importantly, it proposes a habit of engagement that can lead us through this new phase of thinking (and working) in multidisciplinary modes to explore the histories of infectious diseases.
