- Resum
- The study of premodern childhood has significantly evolved since Philippe Ariès's Centuries of Childhood. Despite critiques, the ontological inquiry initiated by Ariès still influences this field. This article argues that such inquiries are limited by the Eurocentric perspectives from which they arise. It conducts a phenomenological and epistemological investigation using medical and religious texts to explore what questions childhood poses. First, it examines children in medical writings, focusing on how they raise epistemological questions and how physicians guide parents. Next, it explores moral and ethical writings, which view children as repositories of responsibility. It further investigates the gendered aspects of these discussions and how these texts link the epistemological dimensions of childhood to sex and gender roles. The article concludes with an epilogue discussing the perception of Palestinian children during the Gaza war, illustrating the emptiness of the Western conceptualization of childhood.
