Servet, Miguel, Apologie contre Leonhart Fuchs, Edited and translated by Jean Dupèbe, Droz, Génova (Cahiers d'Humanisme et Renaissance, 20), 2017, 418 pp.
- Resum
- Michael Villanovanus published his first work, Apologie contre Leonhart Fuchs in Lyons towards the end of 1536, to defend his teacher, the ultra Catholic Symphorien Champier, against the learned German doctor and Lutheran Leonhart Fuchs. This critical edition of the pamphlet plunges the reader into the complex religious and scientific quarrels which split university communities in Early Modern France, Italy and Germany. Villanovanus was generally content to skim over the more delicate questions involved, since his sole aim was to win his master's favour and obtain the letters of support which would enable him to register in the Paris Faculty of Medicine under the tutelage of a friend of Champier's, the Hellenist doctor Jacques Dubois.
